There was a time when we would see James Bond racing his superfast car one minute and diving straight into the water the next. With the push of a button the car would transform into a submarine.
Not a prerogative of Mr Bond anymore, there is a new breed of cars and bikes available to experimental, adventurous and of course, RICH, driving enthusiasts.
The term ‘amphibious vehicles’ is the used for these machines designed to run on land and water. It covers cars, buses, bikes, trucks, military vehicles, hovercrafts and more. The most unique ones would be the cars and bikes as there is more scope for modifications.
The convertible Aquada Sports Amphibian goes at 100 mph on land and jet propels through water at over 30 mph. Whereas the Watercar is known to reach speeds of 125 mph on land and 45 mph on water.
The names given to these ‘creatures’ are quite interesting too like the Landshark, Sea-Roader, Gibbs Aquada and Dukw (pronounced duck).
All these cool, though not necessarily practical, conveyance options are only meant for land and water surfaces, whereas the ‘sQuba’ is probably the world’s first submersible car. It is powered at 75 mph for land and a not so impressive 1.9 mph underwater.
Amphis are obviously not a mass production item at the moment, neither are water bodies near your city for that matter. The thrill of driving on water will have to wait, meanwhile one could go for a spin in another Bond favourite, the Aston Martin!
